Seodang
This piece was handmade from clay and carefully shaped by hand. It was first bisque-fired at 1652°F (900°C) to harden the form. Afterward, a glazing process was applied to enhance its surface and color. Finally, it was glaze-fired at 2300°F (1260°C) to complete the ceramic work.
A Playful Moment in the Seodang
"Seodang" captures a charming and lighthearted scene from a traditional Korean classroom, where a group of children playfully tease their sleeping teacher. The children, full of mischief and energy, take turns using a brush to gently tickle the teacher’s nose, causing his mustache and nostrils to twitch. The teacher, a venerable figure who normally holds authority, is shown in a rare moment of vulnerability, peacefully dozing off, unaware of the children’s playful antics. This scene beautifully illustrates the innocence and joy of childhood, as well as the close, familiar bonds formed within traditional settings.
A Nod to Korean Tradition and Childhood Mischief
This design captures the essence of the seodang, a traditional Korean village school where young children would learn reading, writing, and Confucian values. The children’s playful behavior in this scene adds a touch of humor and warmth, reflecting the spirited nature of youth. The subtle tickling of the teacher's nose, while a playful act, also symbolizes the carefree environment in which learning and laughter coexist in a child’s world.
Perfect for Celebrating Tradition and Innocence
"Seodang" is a delightful tribute to childhood innocence, traditional education, and the bond between teacher and student. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the joy that comes with playful moments and the importance of laughter in everyday life. Whether as a gift or a charming addition to your own space, this piece brings a nostalgic and joyful spirit, celebrating the heart of Korean tradition and childhood fun.
