Dividing Wall Column
Benit M developed the Enhanced Active Vapor Distributor (EAVD®), patented in 2017 as the adjustable
vapor split control for industrial DWC.
EAVD® utilizes a modified chimney tray in which each chimney is covered with a cap that has windows as vapor channels.
• Vapor flow through the windows in the cap.
• Adjusting the liquid level on the chimney tray changes the effective vapor opening area.
• Higher liquid level → smaller window area →
higher pressure drop → reduced vapor flow to that section.
EAVD® enables precise control of vapor split ratio during Dividing Wall Column operation and ensures
uniform vapor distribution in packed columns covering the wide operating range.

Product Summary
In 2022, Benit M performed the basic design for a fractionation process to produce semiconductor-grade solvent.
The process design included a DWC to accommodate all equipment within the limited plant area and deliver about 15% energy savings.
To ensure the stable high-purity of the product and to obtain the minimum energy consumption during the operation, EAVD® was included to control vapor flow in this DWC design.
EAVD® has been successfully implemented, operating reliably since July 2025 in a DWC at a fine-chemical plant.
The results showed that the EAVD® was able to actively adjust the desired vapor split ratio during operation along with the liquid split ratio variations.
With its successful industrial operation, EAVD® technology can be readily applied to existing DWC revamps or
new plant installations across the refinery, petrochemical, chemical, and fine-chemical industries.
Detailed Description
Dividing Wall Columns (DWC) have been widely recognized for their ability to reduce both energy consumption and capital costs by 15-50% through integrating the functions of two conventional distillation columns into a single distillation unit.
However, despite these benefits, maintaining product purity and achieving the intended energy savings can be difficult,
as controlling the vapor split across DWC sections remains a major operational challenge.
To overcome this issue, Benit M developed the Enhanced Active Vapor Distributor (EAVD ® ), patented in 2017 as the adjustable vapor split control for industrial DWC.
In the EAVD® , the window opening area of the vapor flow path is hydraulically adjusted by changing the liquid level of a modified chimney tray. The adjustment of liquid level can be done by operating the control valve in each section of DWC.
