Random numbers are used as the foundation in many areas of security, which include encryption, authentication, signing, key wrapping and other cryptographic applications. Hackers can steal or guess keys, an action which is made easier by poor random number generators. Most computer systems use a software random number generator (RNG) even though they are less secure, because a dedicated hardware RNG is costly, and bulky.  Although software RNGs may be useful in some applications, they fail to provide an adequate security barrier in most applications where true randomness is required.
