Usage of the Universal Joint:

The universal joint is used to link to axes of movement that are placed relatively farther apart, or when the angles of each axis are variable.

Thus, one axis can drive another axis even when the two are not perfectly aligned,

and force can be effectively transferred from the driving axis to the receiving axis positioned at an alternative angle.
